PostSubject: A Raven And A Writing Desk   Tue Jul 01, 2008 6:56 pm

This fiction was done for a friend, who is obsessed with Alice In Wonderland, and always wondered what was the answer to the riddle in it, 'What do a raven and a writing desk have in common?'. This is what she got for an answer.

"What do a raven and a writing desk have in common?"

There was a long and awkward silence. "Huh?"

"What do a raven and a desk have in common?" the figure mused, taking a long drag on his cigarette and then blowing out the smoke. It made a skull that hung in mid-air, laughing silently.

"That's easy." the third one sighed. "Honestly, de liefde van mijn leven, I thought you of all Muses would get that one."

Finn blushed, and promptly glanced at the ground. "It just... doesn't make sense."

"Ahh, my liefde... have you read the work of Edgar Allen Poe?"

"No."

"Then of course it doesn't make sense."

Max sighed. "Come on, we'll work it out together, all right?"

Finn gave a shy blink and nodded, slowly. He was, after all, the new Muse of The Written Word. Nobody would tell him why the last one had died, and Finn wasn't quite sure he wanted to find out. Amongst the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk crowd, Finn was surprised he could hear Max so clearly.

Lexas watched, flicking the top of his lighter back and forth, a look of amusement on his face as Max gently put his arm around Finn's shoulders, causing the young Muse to flinch slightly at the close contact.

"Now, Edgar Allen Poe was a writer, yes? One of the very best. He wrote many a poem and short story, but one of his most popular poems was The Raven."

"Oh, like in the riddle!"

"Yes, exactly like in the riddle. Now, what do you do on a writing desk?"

"Well... I suppose you write on it."

"Good, good. Now, what do a raven and a writing desk have in common, knowing these facts?"

Finn thought. "Umm... did he write any poems about writing desks?"

"No, but he wrote on a writing desk."

There was a long silence. "Writing desks could be black, I think."

Max rubbed his temples, some of his hair falling in his eyes. "Look, I-"

"Poe wrote on both." Finn said, with a small smile.

There was a long pause. "Did you know about that the whole time?!"

"Yes."

Lexas grinned, before letting out another puff of smoke. "He's been taking hints from Ansel."

Max gaped, which slowly turned into a pout. "You're no fun, liefde."

Finn smiled. "I thought it was fun. It's not all the time I get to act innocent."
